EBCI Election Board

Voter Registration/Community Changes must be completed by April 28 for the Primary Election, August 4 for the General Election, and August 8 for the Referendum by 4:00pm. Enrolled Members who will be 18 years of age on the date of or prior to any Election may register to vote before the registration books close.

This Is Official Notice Of A Referendum Election To Be Held On Thursday, September 7th, 2023
Voter registration is now open and will close on August 4 for the General Election and on August 8 for the Referendum Election, at 4:00pm. You may update your voter registration or make a community change during this time. Please call BOE office 828.359.6361 or 828.359.6362 with any questions.

Absentee Application/Ballot Request
July 3rd-August 15th, 2023, for requests made by phone, electronic mail, or US mail. Request made by person in the Board of Elections office should be made 4:00pm the Friday before the said Election. If approved for an absentee ballot, Ballots shall be given or mailed to the prospective voter by the Board of Elections beginning on August 1st, 2023. All absentee ballots must be witnessed, returned to and received by the Board of Elections on August 31st for the Referendum Election and September 1st for the General Election.

Absentee Ballot Requirements

  1. Tribal members serving on active military duty, including immediate family members who reside in the household, who are unable to return to Cherokee/polling place to cast their votes.
  2. Tribal members who are unable to return to Cherokee/polling place to cast their votes.
  3. Tribal members enrolled in institutions of higher education and enrolled members of their household that are unable to return to Cherokee/polling place to cast their votes.
  4. Tribal members who are employees of the Tribe are required to be away from Cherokee for training or for reasons required by their employment on the date of election who are unable to return to Cherokee/polling place to cast their votes.
  5. Tribal members who: because of illness are in a hospital, nursing home, or other treatment facility, and/ or, who because of their physical condition and course of treatment are unable to go to the polling place to cast their votes.
  6. Tribal members who physically reside on Cherokee trust lands but who will be absent from Cherokee on Election Day for business or personal reasons and are unable to return to Cherokee/polling place to cast their votes.

The Following Questions Will Appear On Your Referendum Ballot

  1. Do you support allowing the Tribal ABC Commission to issue mixed beverage permits for the sale of mixed beverages on tribal lands to qualified establishments including but not limited to restaurants, hotels, convention centers and non-profit organizations?
  2. Do you support legalizing the possession and use of cannabis for persons who are at least twenty-one(21) years old, and require the EBCI Tribal Council to develop legislation to regulate the market?

Primary Election- Registration is now open and will close on April 28th at 4:00pm.

  • March 6  Filing for Office begins.
  • March 10  Filing for Office closes.
  • March 30  All Candidates must be notified of decision.
  • April 3  Write-In Filing begins.
  • April 7  Write-In Filing closes.
  • April 3  Absentee Ballot request period begins.
  • April 28  Voter Registration closes at 4:00pm For the Primary Election.
  • April 30 – All Write-In Candidates must be notified of decision.
  • May 1-5 – Beginning of Early Voting 9:00am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday.
  • May 8-12 – Early Voting 9:00am-4:00pm Monday-Friday.

  • May 15-19 – Early Voting 9:00am-4:00pm Monday-Friday.
  • May 20 – Saturday Early Voting 9:00am-4:00pm.
  • May 22 – End of Early Voting 9:00am-4:00pm.
  • May 26 – Absentee Voting In-Person ends at 4:00pm.
  • June 1 – Primary Election Day 6:00am-6:00pm.
  • June 5 – Registration books open for the General Election.
  • July 3 – Absentee Ballot request period begins.
  • August 4 – Registration Closes at 4:00pm for the General.
  • August 8 – Registration Closes at 4:00pm for the Referendum.
  • August 7-11 – Beginning of Early Voting 9:00am-4:00pm Monday-Friday.
