Cherokee, N.C.: Last week, Principal Chief Michell Hicks and members of Tribal leadership traveled to Raleigh to continue important advocacy efforts on behalf of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. During the visit, the delegation met with North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, key state officials, and members of the North Carolina General, including the Senate Chamber and the House Democratic Caucus.
“These visits are part of the important work we must do to protect our sovereignty and move our Tribe forward,” said Chief Hicks. “We can’t wait for others to make decisions to benefit our people. We must be at the table, speaking up and building relationships that help support our people.”
The trip to Raleigh is one of many efforts by the Tribe to stay engaged at both the state and federal levels. Tribal leaders emphasized the need to keep communication strong with elected officials and ensure that the EBCI is included in decisions that impact tribal communities.
“Advocacy is about showing up consistently, listening, and making sure we’re building the kind of partnerships that lead to real outcomes,” Chief Hicks added. “We’re committed to doing that work every step of the way.”
The Tribe will continue to build on these conversations in the months ahead as part of a larger push to advocate for policies and partnerships that strengthen the EBCI and create opportunities for generations to come.
